New solar panel and heat pump installation will inspire their youth to embrace a sustainable future.
Modimolle, SOUTH AFRICA, 21 June 2023 – Hoërskool Nylstroom, in collaboration with Solarise Africa, is proud to announce the commissioning and inauguration of its state-of-the-art solar power installation. This landmark project not only signifies a major milestone for the school but also serves as an exemplary initiative in the region, inspiring the youth to prioritise the battle against climate change and embrace a sustainable way of life.
The solar power plant, with a total capacity of 49.05kWp, is poised to revolutionise the school’s energy consumption. With an estimated annual production of 83MWh, this installation promises to generate significant cost savings while reducing the school’s carbon footprint. What sets this project apart is its integration of heat pump solutions, enabling Hoërskool Nylstroom to save an impressive 60MWh through the water heating system alone. The combined energy saved from the water heating system and solar PV system amounts to an astounding 143MWh annually.
Anton du Plessis, Headmaster of Hoërskool Nylstroom, expressed his excitement about this remarkable achievement, stating, “The commissioning of the solar power plant is a testament to our commitment to environmental sustainability and our responsibility to instil these values in our students. By harnessing renewable energy, we are not only reducing our carbon emissions but also creating a learning environment that empowers our youth to actively contribute to a greener future.”
Sakkie van Wijk, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Solarise Africa, emphasised the importance of financing sustainable projects like Hoërskool Nylstroom’s solar power plant. He commented, “We are proud to have supported Hoërskool Nylstroom in their pursuit of a sustainable energy solution. By providing the necessary financing, we have enabled the school to take a significant step towards energy independence and cost savings, while also aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.
“This ground-breaking solar power plant will allow Hoërskool Nylstroom to replace 40% of their energy consumption with clean, renewable sources. Over the course of the contract tenor, the school anticipates cost savings of R639,000. Moreover, the environmental impact of this initiative cannot be overstated, with an estimated 3,333 tons of CO2 emissions saved during the contract period,” van Wijk concluded.
By spearheading such transformative projects, Hoërskool Nylstroom is setting a powerful example for educational institutions and communities worldwide. The school continues to inspire the next generation of leaders, emphasising the importance of environmental stewardship and the urgent need to combat climate change.
